1961-Weather-Bureau
In 1961, readers of Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Harper's and Scientific American saw this ad as part of a corporate campaign to publicize IBM's research accomplishments. Each advertisement in the series told the story of a specific problem and of IBM's contribution to the solution. This particular ad described how an IBM 7090 computer installed at the U.S. Weather Bureau compiled and calculated global meteorological data. IBM technology has continued to help sharpen and refine the collection and analysis of environmental information. For example, in 2005, the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, in collaboration with the University of Colorado, acquired an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer with a peak performance of 5.7 teraflops to simulate ocean, weather and climate phenomena that affect agricultural production, heating oil prices and global warming.
