1899 - Lohner-Porsche Electric
Unveiled in 1898, the "System Lohner-Porsche", was a carriage-like car driven by two electric motors, directly fitted within the front wheel hubs, and powered by batteries. Since the motors were an in-wheel system, there was really no problem to include a second set in the back by simply mounting two more electric motors to the rear wheels as well for the purposes of racing. Such a specimen was ordered by the Englishman E. W. Hart in 1900.
It was heralded as the "most innovative invention" of the "1900 Paris World Exhibition" and consequently orders were filled for 300 of the cars. With 1800 lbs (around 816kg) of lead-acid batteries, it's quite amazing the cars would routinely achieve a staggering for the time top speed of 31 mph. Although it "showed wonderful speed when it was allowed to sprint", the weight of its huge battery pack meant that it was singularly reluctant to climb hills. The limitations of battery technology prompted Porsche to evolve his design into a range extended EV, creating a serial hybrid. But this story will continue probably on another picture. |
